My Phone Call From "Moses"

By Rush Reagan

Well, at first I thought about writing a column telling you about how great the Republican victories are going to be on Tuesday, but then I decided not to do that for two reasons. First, I'm sure someone else is writing that same column. And two, if for some reason I was wrong in my predictions, I would feel really stupid. So instead, I want to tell you about a phone call I received recently.

Let me set it up for you first. I live in the 9th district of Indiana, wheer Lee Hamilton has been the House Rep for about the last 30+ years. In 1994, Jean Leising ran as a Republican and lost by less than 10,000 votes. In 1996, she didnt fare as well, but still made a good showing. Well, this year, Hamilton decided to retire (soon he will be working in the SPEA here at IU). So Leising is facing Hamilton's hand-picked replacement, Baron Hill.

It will probably be a very close race, and i have no idea who will win. One of the more intereesting things that both candidates have working for them is that both have famous people campainging for them. As mentioned before, Hill has Hamilton. And Leising has someone you really wouldnt expect in Charlton Heston.

Heston has appeared in a commercial prasing Leising, her beliefs, and her vitrues. It's a very well done piece, and will probably gain her a few votes (I voted for her, but not because of that...I have met her, and she was very nice and intelligent). Well, on top of the commerical, he also did something else. He taped a phone call for her (not in the same way Linda Tripp did).

The call started out with an introduction like "Hello. This is Charlton Heston. I know you probably weren't expecting to get a phone call from me, but I want to encourage you to go out and vote for Jean Leising." He was correct in his intro, as I was not expecting a call from him for two reasons. The first reason is obvious, and the second is the fact that I voted on Saturday, since I'll be attending classes on Election Day.

The call continued to be pretty much the same as his commercial, telling me why to vote for Leising. Again, a well done piece that will probably gain her more votes.

So, to anyone reading this, I want to encourage you to go out and vote. And although I would prefer that you vote for Republicans, I think you should vote for the best candidate (in fact I voted for two Democrats this year). So, go vote, and cheer the GOP on to a win. And that's the real deal..
